Campsites: Going South
Honeysuckle Meadery
The first night’s camping spot was a great place to start! Booked through Hipcamp, which is an app that people who have property they feel like sharing list their places on. The host’s name is Dean and he has LOTS of hobbies! Two that came in most handy for us were his booze-making biz and his bonfire skills, the latter included using a leaf blower to get and keep the fire going. We thought it was pretty cool that, twice a year (not related to Easter), he hid hundreds of decorated eggs around part of his many-acre property and hosted community members for a huge bbq, letting the kids search for the eggs at twilight. Quite an evening. Spent more $ on mead than on the camping cost; drank it around the leaf-blower fire. He brought us fresh brewed coffee … his own beans … to the van at 8 the next morning.
Emigrant Springs
Meacham, OR — March 12
Emigrant Springs State Heritage Area
Not much to say about this place. It was a great campground but we didn't see much. Arrived late, the place was covered in snow, risked our necks walking on the ice to get to the washrooms, etc. Snowing the next day as we left.
Earp and James’s Hitching Post
Even less to say about this place. Didn’t even take a picture. It was muddy and snowy at the same time! Guess the town name should have given it away! Probably a lot better in the summer!
Dark Sky Campground
Lots we could say about this place! Definitely an experience of a different geography here. The campsites were complete with lounge chairs as well as table and chairs. We could gaze at the beautiful red rock hills of the area during the day and at the wonderful starry sky at night. The bathrooms were like the kind you find in spas. Definitely hope to go back!
Mather Campground
We only had a night in this comfortable place in the Grand Canyon National Park. Sites were large and surrounded by trees. Peaceful.
At friends, mostly
Avery cruised in an Airbnb while Peter partied with his high school buds for a couple of nights . Then Avery joined in for the final night dinner, laughing, and playing pool. We headed to Tucson for a stay with Avery's friends and on March 21 we started out on the Going East Leg!
